Auckland bin collection FAQs

Bins should be placed on the kerbside the night before collection or by 7 am on the day of collection.

You can put the following items in your recycling bin:

  • Glass bottles and jars (empty and clean)
  • Tin, steel, and aluminium cans (empty and clean)
  • Plastic bottles (grades 1, 2, and 5) from your kitchen, bathroom, and laundry
  • Plastic food containers (grades 1, 2, and 5)
  • Newspapers, magazines, and advertising mail
  • Paper, cardboard, including empty pizza boxes, egg cartons, and window envelopes

Items you cannot put in your recycling bin include:

  • Bagged recycling or rubbish
  • Soft plastic packaging
  • Food waste
  • Clothing, shoes, and bedding
  • Medical waste (including face masks)
  • Garden waste
  • Building waste
  • Chemicals and hazardous waste
  • Nappies and sanitary products
  • Empty aerosol cans
  • Liquid paperboard (e.g., milk and juice cartons)
  • Cookware, Pyrex, and drinking glasses
  • Window and mirror glass
  • Light bulbs, fluorescent tubes, and lamps
  • Electronic and electrical items
  • Batteries
  • Gas bottles
  • Polystyrene packaging

Before reporting a missed collection, ensure:

  • It is after 4:30 pm on your collection day
  • Your bin or bag was placed out on the correct day and before 7 am
  • There is no sticker on your bin explaining why it was not emptied
  • You are using an Auckland Council bin or bag, not a private company's service

If all checks are met, you can log a missed collection request with the Auckland Council by calling 09 301 0101. If confirmed, the missed collection will be addressed within one working day.

During public holidays, rubbish, recycling, and food scrap collections are typically delayed by one day, except for specific exceptions. Download the Collection for Auckland app to receive notifications about bin day changes!

To request a new bin, replace a broken bin, or swap your bin for a different size, you can visit the Auckland Council website and complete the relevant forms.

You can report a damaged or stolen bin online through the Auckland Council's request form. Note that kitchen caddies are not replaced or repaired by the council.

The annual charge for a new or additional recycling bin is calculated based on the month the bin was ordered. Charges are pro-rated, with specific rates available on the Auckland Council website.

Auckland Council provides an annual inorganic collection service for most Auckland households. Here are key points about the service:

  • Collections are scheduled once a year for each area
  • You'll receive a notification letter about 4 weeks before your collection
  • Items should be placed on the kerbside no earlier than 24 hours before your collection day
  • There's a limit of 1 cubic metre of items per property
  • Accepted items include furniture, appliances, and other household items
  • Some items are not accepted, such as garden waste, building materials, and hazardous waste

You can put the following items in your food scraps bin:

  • Fruit and vegetable scraps, including peelings, cores, stalks, and skin.
  • Bread, pasta, and rice.
  • Dairy products.
  • Meat bones and scraps, including fat trimmings.
  • Fish bones and scraps, including shellfish shells.
  • Egg shells, nut shells, and coconut husks.
  • Coffee grounds and tea leaves.
  • Fats/oils – solidified (if possible).
  • Indoor cut flowers.

  • Any type of certified home compostable bin liner.
  • Paper to line your kitchen caddy to help soak up any liquids.

Make sure to keep your food scraps free from plastic and other non-compostable materials!

You cannot put the following items in your food scraps bin:

  • Plastic bags.
  • Disposable food containers (including compostable items).
  • Food wrapping, including cling film, waxed paper, or aluminium foil.
  • Cloth and clothing.
  • Nappies and sanitary products.
  • Pet waste.
  • Liquids or chemicals.
  • Cigarette butts.
  • Soil or rocks.
  • Garden waste like weeds, lawn clippings, or hedge trimmings.
  • Tea/coffee bags (as these may contain plastic).
